When you’re flipping through the pages of your favorite magazine or perusing your favorite blogs, do you ever see something and say, “I am SO doing that!”
Inspiration is everywhere these days, from décor and fashion magazines to sites like MyStyleShare and Pinterest. But the real fun of finding a look you love is to use your creativity and make it your own.
If you’re familiar with the Willow House Spring 2012 catalog, then you probably recognize this beautiful shot…

We all love it so much — it’s so bright and springy. For a closer look and to hear some behind-the-scenes tips, watch this video of Melanie Grant and and Photo Coordinator Extraordinaire, Katie Ward.
But getting back to inspiration, let’s take a closer look at something from this shot that made me say, “I’m SO doing that!”

You may remember that I’m clinically obsessed with the (Wiley) Demibottles. If they were a celebrity, by now they’d have taken out a restraining order on me. What Katie did in this shot only intensified my obsession. I love the torn book pages tucked into the bottle. It adds a nice vintage effect to this sparkly tableau.
I was bored one Sunday afternoon, so I got out one of my many old dictionaries (another style obsession of mine) and proceeded to snip away. Instead of tearing pages, I cut out little chevrons (v’s) and tucked them into one of the demis. Then I asked David to get out his fancy camera and document my work.

We were going to shoot them on the bookcase (where they usually sit) but we were chasing the sunlight … you get the idea. Those books are actually my great-grandmother's Shakespeare books ... printed in the 1800s. You can rest assured I DID NOT tear pages out of them!
So that’s just one way you can take an awesome idea from the spring catalog and play with it a bit to make it your own. Old books are such fun tools for adding smart style — you can get real ratty ones for cheap at antiques stores, and then you don’t have to feel guilty about tearing them up. ;)
Have fun getting inspired this spring, and don’t forget to share your style experiments on MyStyleShare!
