It’s back-to-school time again, and my son Wells is never excited about the end of summer. I can’t imagine most teachers are, either! To make it a little more tolerable, I always look for ways to make that first week back extra special. For example, I host an ice cream party for all of the kids in the neighborhood after the first day of school. It gives them something to look forward to all day, and they like comparing teachers and classes while eating their sundaes.

Another thing I like to do is give a back-to-school gift to his new teacher. My friends joke that I do it to get Wells on his teacher’s good side (hey, I’m not denying that every little bit helps!), but I really do it because I know how hard teachers work, and how little help they get.

Happy back to school for all you teachers, moms and students! Here’s hoping for lots of A’s — gifts never hurt. I’m just sayin’ ...

When I saw the French Wire Carousel Caddy, I knew exactly what I was going to do — fill it with school supplies his teacher will need throughout the year. It’s the perfect holder for pencils, scissors, markers and even small snacks. Wells even got into the act. He loved picking out all of his supplies and then a few extras for his new teacher. He’s entering the first grade, so we chose elementary-age appropriate supplies, but this would work for any grade. Just drop in your supplies, tie a cute ribbon around it and voila — you’ve got a great gift the teacher will use and one that will also look cute sitting on her desk.
